Description

Improving food environments to reduce chronic disease risk is a public health priority. The Food Outlet Dietary Risk Assessment tool (FODR) objectively scores a food outlets’ risks to public health. Assessment criteria include availability of nutritious and nutrient-poor food and alcohol, accessibility, and level of exposure including market share. Chain food businesses represent a significant portion of outlets in the food environment. In 2023, chain food outlets (n=207) were identified and scored using FODR. Scores indicated that 93% of chains posed high or greater risk to public health. Mapping chain food outlets dietary risk can inform government public health priorities.
