Description

Composting dog faeces can expose people to zoonotic bacteria and soil transmitted helminths. Home compost trials were conducted to investigate whether dog faeces composted under typical backyard conditions could be safely used on household edible gardens. Fresh dog faeces and resulting mature compost were tested for bacterial and helminth pathogens and results were compared to pathogen concentration limits of industrially produced compost. Results demonstrate feasibility for dog faeces to be safely home composted and plants grown for human consumption. Practical home dog faecal compost methods used in this study and recommendations for further reducing exposure risks will be discussed.
